Case Study : CV lies lead to million pound fraud

In March 2006 the BBC reported that Robert Adewunmi was convicted of defrauding his employer, the Office of the Deputy Prime minister, of almost one million pounds.

If his CV had been verified he would never have been given the job. He lied about his accountancy qualifications, and concealed previous criminal convictions.

Case Study : fake radiologist commits fraud

Martha Kirkwood-Rhinds worked as a radiologist for South Tees NHS Trust after her CV falsely claimed a degree and membership of a professional body. She wrongly stated that she held a degree in diagnostic radiology and was a member of the Health Professionals Council.

She went on to made fraudulent applications for wages for almost £40,000. She was convicted in July 2005, the BBC reports.

IT Contractors : liable to lie

A survey of verified CVs found that IT contractors are particularly liable to lies or omissions. 70 per cent of applications having some form of discrepancy. Undeclared directorships were particularly high for this group.

Misleading CV

Employers have been warned to scrutinise CVs thoroughly when recruiting senior management following the resignation of a leading hotel executive who was suspected of lying about his qualifications. Patrick Imbardelli, head of Asia Pacific operations at the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), resigned after he was confronted about misleading claims he had made about his academic qualifications.

Case Study : University of Reading

Soraya Yuksel became head of a language department at Reading University after lying about her qualifications. By creating two fictitious teaching/research posts, she managed to swindle the university out of £200,000.
